Boss & A Beatle: Bruce Springsteen Brings Out Paul McCartney In Liverpool

Bruce Springsteen completed a two-show run at Liverpool’s Anfield Stadium on Saturday with an assist from one of the city’s most celebrated scousers, Sir Paul McCartney. Macca returned to his hometown to join The Boss on a pair of rousing duets.

“You’re lucky tonight,” Springsteen told the crowd at the beginning of his encore. “We have a young man, a local young man from Liverpool, he’s gonna play with us tonight, I think he has a lot of talent and I believe he’s gonna be going places.”

Paul McCartney emerged to lead Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band through the Beatles classic “Can’t Buy Me Love.” The performance marked the E Street Band debut of the Lennon-McCartney gem.

McCartney went on to duet with The Boss on “Kansas City,” a Leiber and Stoller-penned tune the Beatles recorded in 1964 and often played live. Springsteen and the E Street Band hadn’t performed the R&B song since 2012.

“Thank you, scousers,” McCartney proclaimed before leaving the stage. The guest spot was Macca’s first performance in Liverpool since his 2018 show at M&S Bank Arena.

Bruce Springsteen’s shows at Anfield marked his first-ever gigs in Liverpool. On Friday, The Boss and Macca made a visit to Liverpool Institute for the Performing Arts, a school McCartney co-founded in 1996, to meet with students.

McCartney’s guest appearance was the latest chapter in the rock legends’ long history of collaborations. In 2022, Bruce Springsteen sat-in with Sir Paul in Glastonbury and New Jersey.
