Bruce Springsteen Dusts Off Tour Debuts & Performs With String Section In Rome

Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band brought The River Tour to Circus Maximus for Rock In Roma 2016 on Saturday. The marathon, 34-song show featured a handful of tour debuts as well as other rarities and a sit-in from the Roma Sinfonietta string section.

The Boss came out for the show with the string section and the entire ensemble teamed up for the tour debut of The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle epic “New York City Serenade.” Springsteen hadn’t performed the 13-minute song since 2014 and it was just the fifth version of “New York City Serenade” in the last 16 years. “Badlands” came next ahead of the tour debut of Eddie Cochran’s “Summertime Blues” which was played by request. Bruce and the band performed a number of tunes in response to signs in the crowd, namely John Lee Hooker’s “Boom Boom” (a tour debut), the “Detroit Medley,” “The Ghost Of Tom Joad” (a tour debut played solo acoustic) and “Tougher Than The Rest.”

Saturday’s show also saw The Boss dedicate “Land Of Hopes And Dreams” to the victims of the recent terrorist attack in Nice and string together an impressive seven-song encore that included “Jungleland,” “Born In The U.S.A.,” “Born To Run,” “Ramrod,” “Dancing In The Dark,” “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out” and “Shout.” Bruce brought the show to a close by himself as he returned after the encore for a solo acoustic performance of “Thunder Road.” The tour now moves on to Denmark.
