Happy Birthday Bruce Hornsby: Grateful Dead Spotify Playlist
Multi-talented musician Bruce Hornsby celebrates his 65th birthday today. Earlier this year, the noisemaking Williamsburg, Virginia-native released his latest studio album, Absolute Zero.
The record was a continuation of Hornsby’s penchant for collaboration that’s been an essential part of his career for several decades. Among those who contributed to the album were Justin Vernon, Blake Mills, yMusic, Brad Cook and Jack DeJohnette. The record also was a continuation of Bruce’s association with the Grateful Dead through the song “Take You There (Misty),” which was co-written with late Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter.
Following Brent Mydland’s death in 1990, Hornsby joined the Grateful Dead on keyboards alongside Vince Welnick. Hornsby remained with the band until early 1992 when he left to focus on his solo endeavors.
In celebration of Bruce’s birthday today, below is a Spotify Playlist featuring official Grateful Dead recordings with Hornsby on keys (and occasionally accordion). The collection is presented chronologically, starting with the band’s concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City on September 16, 1990 — Hornby’s second show as a fulltime member of the Dead. Listen to the Hornsby-era of the Grateful Dead featuring Bruce with Welnick, guitarists Bob Weir and Jerry Garcia, drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann and bassist Phil Lesh below:
