Brendan Bayliss Covers Nirvana, U2, Wilco & More For ‘Wine Not?’
Bayliss made his entrance decked out in a Hawaiian shirt and offered the salutation “Aloha” and through in a “Mahalo” for good measure. BB briefly addressed the anniversary of the pandemic before saying, “Let’s have an enchanting evening together, shall we?” He then kicked off the music with UM’s “Wellwishers,” a song Umphrey’s debuted in 2010 and which remained a staple until becoming something of a rarity of late, as per All Things Umphrey’s. Bayliss then headed into Nirvana’s “All Apologies.” Next, Brendan returned to the Umphrey’s canon with “Half-Delayed.” After some mustache banter, BB offered up the Harry Chapin classic “Cats In The Cradle” before playing his new original, “Everything Is Fine,” which he has performed once before.
Annie Bayliss — wearing a matching Hawaiian shirt — then joined in to duet on “Misbehavin’” from the Danny McBride HBO show The Righteous Gemstones and performed by the characters Aimee-Leigh and Baby Billy. Annie would stay on for a rendition of Wilco’s “You And I” before Bayliss went it alone on the UM rarity “Rocker.” Brendan then explained the Hawaiian shirts. “People, I missed you,” he said. “The last two weeks, Annie and I decided to get the fuck out. So we went to Hawaii.” After a humorous story involving the tooth fairy, BB continued with Dire Straits’ “So Far Away” and Umphrey’s “Mad Love.” The 30db — Brendan’s project with the late Jeff Austin — tune “Susanah” followed. U2’s “All I Want Is You” would act as the penultimate song of the evening. Brendan then headed over to the piano where he shared an amazing story about Umphrey’s McGee, Jeff Austin and the song “Sister Christian” by Night Ranger, which Bayliss proceeded to play and dedicated to Jeff to close out the stream.
