Seth & Scott Avett Team With Brandi Carlile At MerleFest

The 2019 edition of MerleFest hit day three on Saturday at Wilkes Community College in Wilkesboro, North Carolina. Brandi Carlile closed out the festivities that included sets from the likes of Molly Tuttle, Jim Lauderdale, Keb’ Mo’, Sam Bush Band and Donna The Buffalo. During her headlining set on the Watson Stage, the singer-songwriter teamed up The Avett Brothers frontmen Seth and Scott Avett on “Murder In The City.”

The trio gathered around a single mic with Scott Avett on an acoustic guitar as they each sang a verse of the song that originally appeared on The Avett Brother’s 2008 EP The Gleam II. Carlile also has a strong attachment to the song, having included a cover of it on her 2015 album The Firewatcher’s Daughter. The Grammy winner’s career-spanning set also included takes on “The Mother,” “The Story,” “Sugartooth,” “Fulton County Jane Doe” and Elton John’s “Madman Across The Water.”
