Bleachers frontman Jack Antonoff was joined by a bevy of special guests on Saturday night for “Jack Antonoff 1984,” this year’s Bonnaroo Superjam. Joy Oladokun, Goose’s Rick Mitarotonda, Britt Daniel of Spoon, Nicole Atkins and Carly Rae Jepsen were among the musicians who teamed with Antonoff during a set featuring songs from the year Jack was born.
Bonnaroo returned to The Bonnaroo Farm in Manchester, Tennessee this past weekend for the first time since 2019 due to the pandemic in 2020 and a flood in 2021. The Superjam has been a tradition of the event dating back to the festival’s debut in 2002. Antonoff made his Bonnaroo debut with Steel Train in 2005 and returned to the event with that act, as part of fun. and with Bleachers who played a set of their own on Friday.
Jack was backed by a house band featuring members of Bleachers as well as Claud and Blu DeTiger for the Superjam as per Jambands.com’s report. The ensemble got the festivities underway with Van Halen’s “Jump” and then were led by CHVRCHES’ Lauren Mayberry on Madonna’s “Like A Virgin” and “Material Girl.”
The double dose of Madonna was followed by Mitarotonda fronting the group on Talk Talk’s “It’s My Life” and a-ha’s smash hit “Take On Me.” Next, Oladokun emerged for “Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now)” by Phil Collins. The stage was then turned over to Spoon frontman Britt Daniel for rousing renditions of Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m Goin’ Down” and Echo & The Bunnymen’s “The Killing Moon” before Nicole Atkins led the house band through “What Difference Does It Make?” by The Smiths. “What an epic evening,” Atkins wrote of the Superjam on her social channels. “I got to sing one of my favorite Smithâs songs with an incredible band in front of the best crowd and meet so many artists that I admire so.”
After Nicole’s appearance, the set rolled on with a take on Prince’s “When Doves Cry” starring Blu DeTiger. Then, Carly Rae Jepsen came out to sing Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time” and Tina Turner’s “What’s Love Got To Do With It.” From there, Jack Antonoff had his own turn in the spotlight with “You Spin Me Round” by Dead Or Alive. Saturday’s Superjam concluded with Michelle Zauner (Japanese Breakfast singing Nena’s “99 Luftballons” and dueting with Jack on “Islands In The Stream” as Zauner channeled Dolly Parton and Jack channeled Kenny Rogers. Jepsen, Mitarotonda and Oladokun contributed backing vocals to the song written by the Bee Gees.
