Bob Weir & Wolf Bros Cover ‘Big River’ In St Paul
Bob Weir and Wolf Bros resumed their current tour on Tuesday night at the Palace Theatre in St. Paul, Minnesota. The first set featured a pair of debut covers for the trio, including their first performance of Johnny Cash’s “Big River.”
Weir regularly led the Grateful Dead through Cash’s “Big River,” which came as the third selection of the set. The song was played by the Dead at two of their six shows in the capital city, and contains the lyrics, “I met her accidentally in St. Paul, Minnesota.” Bobby, bassist Don Was and drummer Jay Lane started the concert with their first rendition of the New Orleans favorite “Iko Iko.” Tuesday’s first set was rounded out with Weir’s “Lay My Lily Down,” RatDog’s “Even So” and “October Queen” and the classic Dead coupling of “Lost Sailor” and “Saint Of Circumstance.”
“Bombs Away” broke open the second set, which was trailed by “The Music Never Stopped.” Next came the funky “Shakey Ground” and “Easy Answers” with “The Music Never Stopped” woven in. The rest of the night featured “He’s Gone,” a cover of Bob Dylan’s “All Along The Watchtower,” “Wharf Rat” and “Not Fade Away.” Weir, Lane and Was encored with Dylan’s “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue.” The trio’s tour continues tonight at the Riverside Theater in Milwaukee.
