Bob Weir & RatDog Conclude Tour With The String Cheese Incident In 2006

In the Summer Of 2006, bassist Phil Lesh wasn’t the only member of the Grateful Dead to bring his solo band on the road with another jam act as guitarist Bob Weir and his RatDog outfit teamed with The String Cheese Incident for a total for 14 dates. Today marks the 10th anniversary of the collaboration-heavy run’s finale which took place at the Tweeter Center, aka Great Woods, in Mansfield, Massachusetts.

The two acts began the run at the Pozo Saloon in Pozo, California on June 24 and would play such famed venues as the L.A. Greek, Red Rocks, St. Louis’s Fabulous Fox Theatre and Radio City Music Hall in New York City as part of the tour. Every night featured collaborations of some sort and most shows saw sit-ins during both bands’ performances. This was the case at the tour finale in Mansfield as all four sets of music included guest spots.

The String Cheese Incident opened the action on July 15, 2006. Weir emerged at the end of the first set to lend a hand on the RatDog repertoire staple “K.C. Moan” and Bill Browning’s folk classic (and a song performed by the Grateful Dead) “Dark Hollow.” SCI’s second set saw RatDog guitarist Mark Karan add to “Sweet Melinda” and both Mark and Bobby help out on the “Turn On Your Lovelight” closer.

Bob Weir & RatDog’s first of two sets that closed the evening featured SCI’s Michael Kang adding to both the Dead’s “Dark Star” and RD original “She Says.” Kang and Bill Nershi sat-in on “Silvio” > ” Tequila” > “Silvio” > “Tequila” > “Silvio” early in the second set. Then, keyboardist Kyle Hollingsworth contributed to a “West L.A. Fadeaway” that also featured Kang And Nershi. The rest of The String Cheese Incident (Michael Travis, Jason Hann and Keith Moseley) joined the fray as both full bands worked through “Iko Iko.” Kang, Travis and Hann stuck around for the ‘Dog’s nightly “Stuff” excursion ahead of a set-closing run of “Come Together” > “Dark Star” > “Sugar Magnolia” each with Kang sitting in. The evening came to a close with a “Ripple” > “One More Saturday Night” encore. Hollingsworth, Nershi and Kang contributed to the former, while all three as well as Hann appeared on the latter.
