On August 27, 2017 two veterans of the jam scene, Phil Lesh and moe., teamed up for a collaborative phil.moe set as the penultimate performance of the festival that year. Phil’s Grateful Dead band mate Bob Weir also joined in for a set-closing section of “Sugar Magnolia” and more.
The set was a special one for more reasons than just the players involved. moe. had recently revealed that bassist Rob Derhak had been diagnosed with cancer and Phil Lesh was filling in for the beloved bassist who was recovering from treatment. Bob emerged wearing a “Rob” t-shirt in honor of Derhak as well before leading the group through a classic set-closing section of “Sugar Magnolia” and “Sunshine Daydream” with “Scarlet Begonias” in the middle to complete the flower trifecta (magnolias, begonias, roses).
