Tour moved to Los Angeles on Thursday night for the first of two shows at The Theatre At Ace Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Farrell became for the first guest of the tour, when he emerged during the second set for a Grateful Dead classic and a Tom Petty cover.
Weir, bassist Don Was and drummer Jay Lane completely switched up the setlist from the tour opener in Reno. The trio opened with a cover of Little Feat’s “Easy To Slip” before trotting out the traditional “Deep Elem Blues.” Bobby then led the group through “Gonesville” off his 2016 album of cowboy tunes, Blue Mountain. Next came the evening’s first Garcia tunes in the form of “Loose Lucy,” the geographically fitting “West L.A. Fadeaway” and the beloved “Scarlet Begonias.” Weir & Wolf Bros closed out the frame with “Easy Answers.”

Last night’s second set began with the pairing of “Lost Sailor” > “Saint Of Circumstance.” Then, Farrell emerged to the delight of the crowd. Perry dueted with Bob Weir on “Friend Of The Devil.” The pair then shared vocals on a cover of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ “Breakdown.” Before the Tom Petty cover, Farrell told the audience a Deadhead friend advised him “Don’t worry, if you fuck up they’re just going to laugh at you and applaud.” Perry did have some issues with the lyrics but laughed them off. The band extended the first single from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ 1976 self-titled debut ever so slightly, leading Weir to exclaim, “We’re not done, I guess.”
Bob Weir & Wolf Bros followed Farrell’s appearance by performing a sparse “Althea.” The trio then worked “New Speedway Boogie” into “The Other One” and a cover of The Beatles’ “Dear Prudence” into “Going Down The Road Feelin’ Bad.” For the encore, the three-piece went with “Ripple.” Perry Farrell did not join in despite Jane’s Addiction contributing a stellar rendition of the song to the 1991 compilation Deadicated.
