Bob Weir Begins Campfire Tour In California
Guitarist Bob Weir began his solo Campfire Tour last night with a performance at Marin Veterans Memorial Auditorium in San Rafael, California. The two set show saw the founding member of the Grateful Dead mix classics from the band’s repertoire with a number of songs from his just issued solo album Blue Mountain.
Weir began the concert playing a solo acoustic rendition of the LP’s title track. He was then joined on stage by a band featuring longtime collaborator, guitarist Steve Kimock, The National members Bryan Devendorf on drums and Scott Devendorf on bass, and multi-instrumentalists Jon Shaw and Blue Mountain co-producer Josh Kaufman. The first set primarily stuck to songs from Weir’s first album of entirely new music in over 30 years, offering up “Only A River,” “Lay My Lily Down,” “Whatever Happened To Rose,” “Ghost Towns,” and “Gallop On The Run” before slipping in Dead favorite “He’s Gone.” The Blue Mountain track “Gonesville” brought the first half to an end.
Following the intermission the band switched entirely to songs from the Dead’s live catalog, opening with “Althea.” A cover of “Me & My Uncle” came head of a sequence that included “Playing In The Band” > “The Other One” > “Looks Like Rain” > “Playing In The Band” which comprised the remainder of the second set. Bobby returned alone and armed with his acoustic guitar to start the encore with the Blue Mountain song “KI-YI Bossie.” Accompanied by the band, Dead staple and Merle Haggard original “Mama Tried” came ahead of the “Ripple” that closed out the three-song encore.
