The first official teaser trailer for the highly anticipated new Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown has arrived. Actor Timothée Chalamet is showcased as Dylan and sings Bob’s “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” within the two-minute clip.

Directed by James Mangold, A Complete Unknown traces Dylan’s career from his move to New York City in 1961 through his infamous electric appearance at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. Chalamet is joined in the cast by Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez, Edward Norton as Pete Seeger and Elle Fanning as his girlfriend, Sylvie Russo. Mangold told Rolling Stone that Sylvie Russo is a pseudonym for Dylan’s real girlfriend during the period, Suze Rotolo.

As reported, Timothée Chalamet does his own singing in the film. James Mangold wrote the screenplay with Jay Cocks based on the 2015 tome Dylan Goes Electric! Others set to appear in A Complete Unknown include Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Casg, Scoot McNairy as Woody Guthrie, P.J. Byrne as Harold Leventhal and Will Harrison as Bob Neuwirth.

James Mangold had high praise for Chalamet’s vocal chops, stating to Rolling Stone that Timothy made the portral work:

I think what’s so wonderful about what Timmy is doing is that, while not answering questions about Bob, at the same time I think he does in a very poetic way, which is to suggest really empathically through his performance how one might want to make music, but one might not want to have people in your face all the time. And I think in a way, Bob answers that… Timmy, who I’m used to calling Bob sometimes, answers that question. I think he walks a really beautiful line of allowing an audience to see what a joy it is for this character to make music and what pure joy he experiences in his camaraderie with other musicians and his exploration of ideas and words and music, both making it and listening to others. Where Timmy also does something really quite profound is to show you his almost genetically predisposed discomfort with what his own great achievements then bring upon him and that, in terms of people wanting things, transactional relationships, or relationships that are tainted by the immense power and talent.

A Complete Unknown hits theaters in December via Searchlight Pictures. Watch the first teaser trailer below:
