Bob Dylan, Jeff Tweedy & Jim James Cover ‘The Weight’ On 2013 AmericanaramA Tour
The AmericanaramA Tour took place in summer 2013 featuring a lineup anchored by Bob Dylan, Wilco and My Morning Jacket. Members of My Morning Jacket, including frontman Jim James, were disappointed by the tour’s supposed promise of regular collaborations with Dylan, as such stage sharing proved scarce.
“The whole concept of the tour was supposed to be super collaborative,” James told Rolling Stone in November 2013. “We were expecting to be sitting around the campfire with Dylan at 2 a.m. and go, ‘Let’s cover all of Desire tomorrow!’ We had all these pipe dreams. [But] Bob really wasn’t around. We never talked to him once. He does not hang, which is fine and understandable … or it’s kind of understandable. I don’t know.”
Despite the lack of communication, Dylan did invite James and Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy to collaborate a few times on the tour. One of the rare instances Dylan brought out his AmericanaramA mates was on this date in 2013. The tour stop on July 24, 2013 was in Virginia at Farm Bureau Live at Virginia Beach.
Several shows into the tour, James and Tweedy joined Dylan and his band on “Twelve Gates to the City” and again on “Let Your Light Shine On Me.” During his headlining set in Virginia Beach, Dylan brought out Tweedy and James for a cover of The Band’s classic “The Weight,” with each taking a turn singing a verse.
Dylan also brought out Tweedy and James, along with Peter Wolf, at the next AmericanaramA Tour stop on July 26 in New Jersey. Later in the tour, Ryan Bingham also joined Tweedy and James as one of Dylan’s “The Weight” guests.
