The Marcus King Band concluded a two-night stand at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta on Friday night with help from their friends. King & Co. were joined by Widespread Panic drummer Duane Trucks, Tedeschi Trucks Band saxophonist Kebbi Williams, Blackberry Smoke frontman Charlie Starr, guitarist Benji Shanks and the members of Ida Mae at various points of the show.

Last night’s show began with “Virginia” off the group’s self-titled 2016 studio album and “Where I’m Headed” from the recently released Carolina Confessions. The Marcus King Band then worked portions of The Allman Brothers Band’s “Mountain Jam,” Chicago’s “25 Or 6 To 4,” Parliament’s “I’ll Stay” and “Gloomy Sunday” by Billie Holiday within “Sharry Barry.” A run of originals that included “Welcome ‘Round Here” and “Side Door” followed.

The MKB went on to jam the traditional “Prisoner Of Love” into Funkadelic’s “Red Hot Mama.” Duane Trucks helped out on the final portion of the Funkadelic cover. Next came a gorgeous rendition of the spiritual “Lift Every Voice & Sing” that bled into “Confessions.” King and his band then paid tribute to Col. Brue Hampton by performing “Compared To What” with Kebbi Williams. The set concluded with a stellar cover of “Wiser Time” by The Black Crowes featuring Benji Shanks and Charlie Starr. Marcus played the song every night earlier this year as part of As The Crow Flies. For the encore, The Marcus King Band were aided by Chris Turpin and Stephanie Jean of opening act Ida Mae for a stunning “Can’t Find My Way Home” and joyous “Goodbye Carolina.” Photographer Ian Rawn was on hand to capture the action.
