The Black Crowes celebrated Halloween with a concert on Thursday at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. Dressed in skeleton costumes as “The Black ‘Dead’ Crowes,” the band debuted three covers for the occasion and dusted off an original last played over a decade prior.

Chris and Rich Robinson went outside their usual classic rock wheeelhouse for the new covers last night. Instead, The Black Crowes chose Halloween-appropriate songs popularized by punk rockers 45 Grave, British shock rocker Screaming Lord Sutch and garage rockers The Cramps.

The Black Crowes premiered their take on 45 Grave’s 1983 gem “Evil” to get last night’s show underway. Then, after playing two cuts from their 2024 album, Happiness Bastards, and a pair of fan-favorites, Chris Robinson informed the crowd, “We’ve got a song about somebody who used to roam the streets of London.” With that, the band launched into “Jack The Ripper,” a song written by Clarence and Charles Stacy, Walter Haggin and Joe Simmons. The Crowes’ rendition was similar to the version released in 1963 by Screaming Lord Sutch.

Another surprise followed a few songs later when The Black Crowes premiered a cover of “Goo Goo Muck.” The Cramps released the best-known version of “Goo Goo Muck” on their sophomore studio album, 1981’s Psychedelic Jungle. The song dates back to 1962 when Ronnie Cook and The Gaylads were the first to record it.

After unveiling the third and final cover debut of the night, The Black Crowes broke out their own “Evil Eye” for the first time since October 1, 2013. “Evil Eye” is featured on the band’s 1996 LP, Three Snakes And One Charm.

The rest of the show was bookended by Velvet Underground covers: “Oh! Sweet Nuthin'” and the “White Light/White Heat” encore. The Black Crowes mixed Happiness Bastards tracks and classics such as “Thorn In My Pride,” “Wiser Time” and “Remedy” in between.
