The Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson celebrates his 57th birthday today. A month before his 30th birthday, Chris and The Black Crowes performed for Dutch television program 2 Meter Sessions in November 1996.

Taking place at Bullet Sound Studios near Amsterdam, The Crowes appearance on 2 Meter Sessions came as part of a European tour in support of their 1996 album, Three Snakes and One Charm. It was also a time that saw the band struggling in their relationships with each other, as music writer Bob Gendron pointed out in a review of the performance for The Coda Collection.

“You’ll be hard-pressed to spot any smiles on the faces of the Black Crowes during their otherwise convincing performance on Nov. 17, 1996 at Bullet Sound Studios in Amsterdam. When he teases drummer Steve Gorman for causing the band to pause amid “Better When You’re Not Alone,” singer Chris Robinson finally manages a grin that spreads to a few of his colleagues for the briefest of moments. Largely, however, we see six individuals who don’t appear to like one another much — and seem allergic to having fun while playing together.”

“Everyone goes through changes,” Chris Robinson said weighing in on the situation in a 1996 interview with Guitar World. “The trick is trying to remember that and keep it together, and having respect for everyone and not judging people because you’re all goin’ through changes. Perseverance is the thing. You have to get your ego in place.”

That philosophy seemed to be in place as the band — vocalist Chris Robinson and his brother guitarist Rich Robinson, drummer Steve Gorman, bassist Johnny Colt, keyboardist Eddie Harsch and guitarist Marc Ford — didn’t let the troubles get in the way of the performance. The Crowes kick off the session with Three Snakes and One Charm deep cut “How Much For Your Wings,” a laid back if not crunchy ballad which sees Chris and Rich sharing vocal duties.

Chirs and Rich also harmonized well on a cover of The Byrds’ “He Was A Friend Of Mine,” which saw Rich picking up a Rickenbacker electric 12-string guitar for the jangly folk rock classic. The Crowes also included Three Snakes and One Charm’s chugging rocker “Let Me Share The Ride.” The video below concludes with Amorica (1994) standout “Wiser Time,” which gets underway with the stellar guitar stylings of Marc Ford.
