Billy Joel Welcomes Multiple Guests At Fenway Park

On Friday night Billy Joel played his second of four shows at Major League Baseball stadiums in 2018 as he headed to Boston for a gig at Fenway Park. The Long Island-born and bred singer-songwriter welcomed a pair of guests, which included a hometown hero and hair metal icon, during his career-spanning night in Beantown.
Joel got his night going in the historic ballpark on Yawkey Way with “Big Shot” from his 1978 release 52nd Street. After a take on fan-favorite “My Life,” which was used as the theme song for the Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari sitcom Bussom Buddies the 69-year-old musician reached for “Summer, Highland Falls.” The track from Turnstiles was dusted off for the first time since October of last year at Madison Square Garden. Three songs later Joel nodded to his surroundings by offering up a partial cover of Boston’s “More Than A Feeling.” Joel continued to dig into his songbook mixing hits like “Moving Out (Anthony’s Song),” “The Entertainer,” “Allentown” and “New York State Of Mind” with a pair of deeper cuts “And So It Goes” and “Don’t Ask Me Why.”
Towards the back end of his 22-song main set, Joel welcomed out his first guest of the night as Peter Wolf emerged. The J. Geils Band frontman sang led on a take on the Boston-area band’s 1982 number one hit “Centerfold” from their tenth studio album Freeze Frame. After a take on “Sometimes A Fantasy,” Joel offered up his second surprise of the night as he welcomed out Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott. The lead singer of the seminal 1980s hair metal act, who will team up with Journey for a gig at Fenway tonight, served up a take on “Pour Some Sugar On Me” from their multi-platinum release Hysteria.

“Only the Good Die Young,” “Scenes From an Italian Restaurant” and “Piano Man” helped finish off the main portion of the night. Joel returned for a four-song encore. After takes on “We Didn’t Start The Fire,” “Uptown Girl” and “It’s Still Rock and Roll To Me,” Elliott returned to help close things out as he assisted Joel on a show-ending take on “You May Be Right.”
