Billy Joel Welcomes John Mayer & Steve Miller At MSG

New York native Billy Joel continued his unprecedented monthly residency at Madison Square Garden in NYC last night, where the show took on a celebratory feel as the New York Mets completed a sweep of the Chicago Cubs while the performance went on. Joel added to the festivities by welcoming two special guests – guitarists John Mayer and Steve Miller – at various points of the evening.

The first surprise of the night came early on when Billy busted out “Leningrad,” which was last played stateside way back in 1990. Joel performed the song in honor of Viktor, the Russian native featured in the lyrics of the tune, who was at MSG last night. Shortly thereafter, Billy Joel welcomed John Mayer to the stage for “This Is The Time.” The Dead & Company guitarist previously performed with the pianist during his Last Play At Shea run at Shea Stadium. Throughout the evening Joel mentioned the action going on at Wrigley Field, where the Mets were finishing off the Cubs, to the delight of the crowd.

Steve Miller was Billy Joel’s second guest and led the keyboardist and his band through a rendition of “The Joker.” Joel then continued to roll through some of his biggest hits and even threw in quick takes on “Meet The Mets” and “Take Me Out To The Ballgame.” Billy Joel had one more surprise in store for the encore as Mayer returned for a version of “You May Be Right” that dipped its toes into “Crossroads.”

Billy Joel’s residency at MSG continues on November 19.
