Billy Joel recently announced he’ll release his first new song since 2007, “Turn the Lights Back On,” on February 1 via Columbia. The release will proceed Joel’s newly announced performance spot at the 2024 Grammy Awards as well as concerts with Sting, and for the first time ever, Rod Stewart, on select dates in the fall.

Joel co-wrote the new tune with Arthur Bacon, Wayne Hector and Freddy Wexler, with the latter producing the track. The aptly named “Turn The Lights Back On” marks Joel’s first new music since the 2007 double release “All My Life” and “Christmas in Fallujah.” Joel signaled his separation from songwriting with the closing track, “Famous Last Words,” on his 1993 album, River of Dreams, which ends with the stanza:

  • And these are the last words I have to say
  • It’s always hard to say goodbye
  • But now it’s time to put this book away
  • Ain’t that the story of my life

A preview video of “Turn On The Lights” posted to his social media begins with a page turning on the “Famous Last Words” lyrics. Watch below:

Shortly after the new song arrives, the five-time Grammy-winner is set to perform at the 2024 awards ceremony. The Grammys air Sunday, February 4 from Los Angeles at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.
