Billie Eilish was the featured guest on Tuesday’s episode of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. The global superstar offered the debut performance of “Lunch” off her recently released new album, Hit Me Hard And Soft, and sat for an extended interview.

While Billie Eilish and host Stephen Colbert previously connected via Zoom, last night marked the first time they met in person. Hit Me Hard And Soft arrived last Friday and Eilish is extremely proud of the follow-up to 2021’s Happier Than Ever.

“I think that with Hit Me Hard and Soft, it’s the first time since I’ve been an adult and maybe ever in my creative life — it truly is the most genuine thing I’ve ever made. It feels very, very me,” Eilish told host Stephen Colbert of her third studio album.

The 22-year-old singer played coy about the title of the album wanting fans to each take their own interpretation of what Hit Me Hard And Soft means. Eilish was nervous throughout the interview and mentioned, “I really feel like I’m back after being retired” in returning with her first album in three years. Billie also shared the story of the photo shoot for the album’s cover. “Dude, I was wearing big, long pants, like giant Pro Club shorts. I was wearing a thermal long sleeve, a button-up flannel, a tie, rings, arm warmers, bracelet and a weight. I had a weight strapped to me,” Eilish explained of the six hours she spent in a water tank.

In another segment Eilish discussed some of her favorite singers. Stephen Colbert noted Lana Del Rey called Eilish “the voice of our generation” while introducing her at Coachella. “She’s the voice of my generation and she’s one of the top three reasons I am the artist that I am,” Eilish said. Billie also mentioned Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Julie London, Chet Baker, Harry Belafonte and Johnny Mathis as vocalists who inspired her.

Billie Eilish was joined by her brother FINNEAS and her band for the first televised performance of “Lunch.” Watch Eilish roll through “Lunch” and the interview segments below:
