Kentucky-born cellist and composer Ben Sollee has unveiled a cover of Tom Petty’s 1994 gem “Time To Move On.” Sollee recorded “Time To Move On” with longtime collaborator Jordon Ellis as a reaction to the election of President-Elect Donald Trump.
Ben shared the cover with a note expressing his disappointment with Trump’s election. “Sadly, the campaign that won this election is built on some unsettling messages that I do not agree with or condone. But, I partly blame myself. I know now that I have been too casual a citizen,” Sollee wrote. “This election has been exhausting and has exposed some uncomfortable truths about America. Now, it’s time to move on.”
Read the message from Ben:
Hi All,
I wish you all some peace today. This election has been exhausting and has exposed some uncomfortable truths about America. Now, it’s time to move on.
I believe in the power of music to bring folks together. In 1994, Tom Petty released the song “Time to Move On” on his Wildflowers album. It has always been a favorite of mine but in the context of this election the words take on a whole new meaning. I infused all the hope I could muster in this cover. I hope you can hear it.
Forgive me for being candid, but I am so disappointed. I hear the unrest in people’s voices and I feel it when I travel around the country. Sadly, the campaign that won this election is built on some unsettling messages that I do not agree with or condone. But, I partly blame myself. I know now that I have been too casual a citizen. It’s time for me and so many other young Americans to engage and formally state our positive, inclusive message. I will be much more involved from this point on… I hope you will be as well.
With love from the road,
Ben
