Genre-defying act Béla Fleck and the Flecktones was formed as a quartet and remained as such through Howard Levy’s departure in 1992. Between 1993 and 1996 the band toured a trio, though often had special guests. Jeff Coffin joined in 1997 and stayed through 2008, when the saxophonist officially joined the Dave Matthews Band. Howard then came back into the fold through the start of a hiatus in the early ’10s. Béla Fleck & The Flecktones returned a pair of three-week tours in 2016 and 2017 with the original lineup featuring Levy. Early next year the band will tour as a trio for the first time since 1996.

Master banjo picker Béla Fleck, legendary bassist Victor Wooten and Drumitar innovator Roy “Futureman” Wooten make up the new configuration of the group. Béla Fleck & The Flecktones Trio currently have four dates on the books. Up first is a performance at Charleston Music Hall in Charleston, South Carolina on February 6. Then, the trio visits The Capitol Theatre in Clearwater, Florida on February 7 and Orlando’s Plaza Live on February 8. Béla Fleck & The Flecktones Trio will also perform as part of the GroundUP Music Festival in Miami Beach, which runs February 9 – 11.

We’ll be sure to keep you posted on any additional announcements from the trio. In the meantime, watch Fleck introduce the trio and a performance of “Celtic Medley” from 1993:
