Beck had an unexpected musician in his string section when he returned to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday: actor Sacha Baron Cohen on cello. Beck performed “In The Night” from his latest album, Ride Lonesome, and sat down with host Jimmy Fallon for an interview.
Members of Beck’s band and a full string section backed him on the ballad. “In The Night” arrived in July as the second preview of Ride Lonesome, which was released on September 18. The record marked his first album of new material since 2019’s Hyperspace and reunited him with longtime collaborators from his Sea Change and Morning Phase recordings.

During the interview, Beck discussed Ride Lonesome, his musical inspirations and an unexpected connection to Zoolander. Someone in the film’s cast told him Owen Wilson’s character, Hansel, was partly based on him.
“I don’t know if it’s true, but I’ll take it,” Beck said, pointing out the similarity between his surname, Hansen, and the character’s name.
Beck also revealed that he was asked to appear in the movie. “I stupidly said no. And they got David Bowie,” Beck recalled.

Beck resumes his Ride Lonesome Tour with two nights at Brooklyn Paramount on October 22 and 23. The trek continues through the East Coast and Southeast, including a Halloween show at The Truth in Nashville, before heading to the Pacific Northwest for November dates. The run concludes November 10 at Keller Auditorium in Portland, Oregon. He’ll then open for U2 in 2027.
