Beach Boys Cancel Or Postpone Nearly 30 Summer Shows, Cite ‘Short Break to Recharge’

The Beach Boys' endless summer has come to an early end. Nearly 30 concerts originally planned for between tonight (July 23) and September 3 have been abruptly canceled or postponed.

The legendary band cited the need for “a short break to recharge” as the reason for the sudden change to their tour schedule in a statement. The Beach Boys aim to resume touring activities on September 24 in West Springfield, Massachusetts.

“Playing for you is the highlight of our summer every year—especially as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States while saluting the 60th Anniversary of Pet Sounds. We’ve been having a blast out there, and to keep the good vibrations going strong, we’ll be taking a short break to recharge before getting back on the road in September. All tickets for postponed performances (July 23 through September 3) will be honored following our return late September. Please contact your local box office for additional information and questions. Thanks for your understanding—we can’t wait to see you back out there for a September to Remember.”

Of the 29 affected concerts, all but 11 were canceled outright. Rescheduled dates for shows in Quakertown (Pennsylvania), Bristol (Virginia), Nashville, Cincinnati, Bloomington (Indiana), Aurora (Illinois), Edmonton and Calgary have been confirmed by the venues. Performances planned for Wantagh (New York), Indianapolis and Lewiston (Idaho) have been postponed with the new dates to be announced.

While The Beach Boys’ statement didn’t get specific as to why the summer dates were scrapped, longtime collaborator Dean Torrence revealed that co-founding vocalist Mike Love has been dealing with health issues. “He’s struggling now. He’s not well, and he’s struggling,” Torrence told Rolling Stone, “but he’s not going to stop until it’s really over.”

Videos shared on social media of recent Beach Boys shows display the struggles Mike Love has been experiencing. His voice seemed weak and he had a hard time moving around the stage.
