Outside Lands :: 8.11-13.17 :: Golden Gate Park :: San Francisco
The 10th installment of Outside Lands was held in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park this past Friday through Sunday. While headliners A Tribe Called Quest’s set was postponed and then cancelled following Queens Of The Stone Age pulling out just before the festival began, there was still plenty of music from a diverse array of acts presented all weekend long. There was also a bevy of “only at Outside Lands” food and beverage options including the famed Choco Lands, Wine Lands and Gastromagic setups. Friday’s action was highlighted by a guest-filled Gorillaz performance, a set from the recently revived Fleet Foxes, a hearty dose of Americana from Shovels & Rope and a taste of indie-pop courtesy of Scotland’s Belle & Sebastian.
Saturday at Outside Lands was another busy day across the festival’s many stages. Metallica treated hometown fans to a career-spanning 18-song performance that included the fitting “Welcome Home (Sanitarium).” The Avett Brothers mixed original material with covers of Bob Dylan’s “I Shall Be Released” and Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun.” Dawes pulled from all of their studio albums for a Sutro Stage set, while Thundercat and Kaytranada impressed on the Twin Peaks Stage. The Who closed out this year’s festival with a set loaded with beloved favorites. Other highlights from Sunday included Lorde teaming with Jack Antonoff for a cover of Paul Simon’s “Me & Julio Down By The Schoolyard,” a set from Texas three-piece Khruangbin and keyboardist Marco Benevento showing off a trio of his own.
