The Avett Brothers Honor Chris Cornell In Orlando
By Scott Bernstein May 26, 2017 • 6:22 am PDT
On Thursday night The Avett Brothers returned to the stage for the first time since the passing of their friend and collaborator Chris Cornell. The Avetts didn’t wait long to honor Cornell in front of a capacity crowd at the House Of Blues in Orlando.
Seth and Scott Avett led their mates through an electric and emotional “Black Hole Sun” to kick off the night in Orlando. “Black Hole Sun” is perhaps Soundgarden and Cornell’s most popular song. The Avetts played it fairly straight as they brought the tune to a blistering crescendo.
Watch The Avetts’ cover of “Black Hole Sun” captured by Christina Stelling:
In October 2013 The Avett Brothers performed twice with Chris Cornell on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Up first was the debut of the Avetts’ original “Vanity” from Magpie & The Dandelion. A few weeks later the Soundgarden frontman led The Avett Brothers on a cover of Pearl Jam’s “Footsteps” as part of The Tonight Show’s Pearl Jam Week. Finally, Scott and Seth sat-in with Chris Cornell during the vocalist’s December 2, 2013 acoustic show at Knight Theater in Charlotte on “Vanity,” “Footsteps” and Audioslave’s “Like A Stone.”
