The Avett Brothers Go Big And Small At Home State New Year’s Eve Show

The Avett Brothers hosted a home state New Year’s Eve concert Sunday night at PNC Arena in Raleigh, North Carolina. The performance saw the band play a few tunes on a small stage in the venue’s lobby, welcome patriarch Jim Avett to sit-in and employ the services of Father Time to help ring in 2018.

After opening the show with “Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise” and playing favorites such as “Laundry Room,” “Old Joe Clark” and “Geraldine,” Scott Avett, Seth Avett and Bob Crawford headed to small stage set up in the venue’s hallway. The original trio performed “Shame” and “Distraction #74” while the performance was simultaneously shown on video screens above the main stage. Violinist Tania Elizabeth performed “Tania” as the other members of the band made their way back to the main arena stage.

Father Time (a costumed Valient Himself of Valient Thorr) was lowered from the ceiling, and following some bantering with the Avetts he assisted in counting down the final seconds of 2017. The Avett Brothers and Father Time then launched into rocking renditions of Aerosmith’s “Sweet Emotion” and Tommy James & the Shondells’ “I Think We’re Alone Now.”

Earlier in the evening Scott and Seth welcomed their father Jim to join them on a cover of Al Green’s “Precious Lord Take My Hand.” During “Kickdrum Heart” Scott made his way through the crowd while playing his guitar parts. Several of the concert’s highlights were captured on video by DCRANGERFAN, view the audience-shot footage below:
