The Avett Brothers Cover Jerry Garcia, Pink Floyd, Leonard Cohen & More In Richmond

North Carolina-based act The Avett Brothers pulled into Richmond, Virginia this weekend for performances on Friday and Saturday nights at The National. The band played a number of rare covers and also worked a debut into their sets in Richmond.

The Avett Brothers opened with their beautiful rendition of George Harrison’s “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)” on Friday night. After a series of originals the group served up the 2017 debut of the Hunter/Garcia gem “Mission In The Rain.” Two songs later, the band debuted a new original thought to be titled “C-Sections & Railway Trestles.” Friday’s 28-song performance came to a close with an encore of “Little Sadie,” “Kick Drum Heart” and “Life.”

Saturday’s performance saw the group utilize a completely different setlist as they showed off their ever-growing repertoire. While the Avetts mostly focused on career-spanning original material, they threw in five covers for good measure. The evening’s main set included takes on Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” Bob Dylan’s “I Shall Be Released,” Jim Croce’s “Operator” and “The Prettiest Thing” by David Childers & The Modern Don Juans, Saturday’s encore featured the band’s second ever version of “Time” by Pink Floyd.
