Full Show Audio: Umphrey’s Dusts Off Tool Cover In Atlanta

By Scott Bernstein Jan 15, 2017 8:33 am PST

Umphrey’s McGee continued a three-night stand at The Tabernacle in Atlanta on Saturday night. The band mixed fan favorites with a few rarities including the return of Tool cover after more than two years.

Umphrey’s opened with “North Route,” an original they had debuted during their recently completed New Year’s Run. The band found multiple opportunities to jam as part of the “Similar Skin” that followed and the same held true of the third song of the evening, “Wappy Sprayberry.” The “Wappy” had an ’80s feel and gave way to a singalong “Hajimemashite.” Later in the set UM played a “Deeper” that saw guitarist Jake Cinninger move over to keys. A euphoric “Miss Tinkles Overture” ended the first set.

The second set began with a wild “Plunger” > “Glory” > “Plunger” sequence and continued on with an extended “Triple Wide.” It was “The Triple Wide” that started an impressive bulk of the closing stanza that also featured “Push The Pig” and a “Hurt Bird Bath” with “Full Frontal” in the middle. Umphrey’s McGee ended the second set with a cover of Tool’s “Forty-Six & 2,” the first since November 6, 2014 – a span of 205 shows. The evening concluded with a “Puppet String” encore. On Sunday, UM brings their visit to Atlanta to a close. A live webcast is available via TourGigs.com.
