Audio: Phish Hints At Swinging Dick’s Night With Denver Soundcheck

Phish began their annual three-night stand at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park near Denver on Friday night with a “swinging show” in which drummer Jon Fishman noted the band was “swinging Dick’s.” The theme of the night may have come from the soundcheck, where the foursome jammed for a bit on the Steve Miller Band 1977 hit “Swingtown.” Audio of the entire soundcheck has emerged.

The Vermonters began Friday’s soundcheck by working on “Mercury,” an original debuted in 2015 that went missing in 2016. Phish finally played “Mercury” during the second set on Friday following a lengthy rehearsal in soundcheck. The band jammed “Mercury” into a vamp based on WAR’s “Low Rider.” WAR’s 1975 classic had been played by Phish seven times between 1985 and 2003 and was teased or jammed on nearly two dozen additional times. The quartet didn’t sing the lyrics during Friday’s soundcheck with Trey Anastasio, Mike Gordon and Page McConnell each taking turns simulating the lyrics with their instruments.

One of the best parts of the soundcheck followed the “Low Rider” jam as Phish presented an extremely unusual version of “Camel Walk.” Instead of playing the early gem written by former member Jeff Holdsworth at its typical funky pace, Phish changed up the tempo making for a particularly cool rendition of “Camel Walk.” It was almost like “Camel Walk” performed to the tune of “Low Rider.” Trey, Mike, Fish and Page then rehearsed Fuego track “Waiting All Night” and followed it up with a brief jam on “Swingtown.” The Steve Miller Band tune was “played” once by Phish on July 2, 1997 after spiraling out of a “Stash” -> “Llama” sequence as a “Wormtown” jam. So perhaps that’s why “swing” was on Fish and Phish’s minds.
