Aron Magner Debuts SPAGA Project: Pro-Shot Video
On October 5, the Disco Biscuits keyboardist Aron Magner debuted a new project entitled SPAGA at Hill Girt Farm in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. The sold-out event featured a performance from Magner’s trio accompanied by a gourmet meal prepared by award-winning chef Yehuda Sichel. Pro-shot video of two songs from SPAGA’s debut premiered live at the show and via the stream of the Biscuits’ Saturday night performance at The Palladium in Worcester. SPAGA’s versions of “Colors” and “Track 2” can be viewed below.
Magner is joined in SPAGA by Jason Fratecelli on upright bass and drummer Matt Scarano. “Basically, after more than a few friends and fellow musicians suggested over the years that I should make a solo album, I decided to go back to my first instrument and strip away the synths,” explained Aron of his mostly-acoustic trio. “The song ‘Colors’ was the first song I wrote for the project, and it wasn’t for another six months or so after that more songs began to form.”
The pianist speaks highly of his band mates. “Having fun exploring the songs with no preconceptions of what the music actually was yet, or for that matter who we were as a trio yet, provided for unexpected and welcoming results,” Magner added. “Of course these cats know how to improvise and jam. They’re jazzers. The root foundation of that genre shares the same ethos of jambands. Explore. Improvise. Group play.” While the future for SPAGA is undefined, Magner is excited for what the future holds after such an exciting debut:
I wanted to debut the project in a unique way, and there were several synergistic events that brought me down to a farm 45 minutes from Philly and pair with a celebrated Philly Chef. I’m not sure if EVERY performance for this project will have some sort of unique event attached to it. I think the trio needs to play some regular shows and continue to explore our musical interactions. There’s something special here and I’m gonna follow it through.
