Andrew Bird and Iron & Wine (Sam Beam) recently gathered around Bob Boilen’s desk to play a session filmed for NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Concert video series. The pair, who are currently on tour together, joined forces on a four-song set.

Boilen initially invited Bird to return to Tiny Desk for a solo performance six years after Andrew played a full-band set for the series. The Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist wanted to have Beam join him for a song but after the collaborative tour started plans changed and the pair wound up uniting for the entire session.

Andrew Bird and Sam Beam first met and performed together last year after they were long fans of each other’s work. Bird and Iron & Wine collaborate more on stage with each passing gig of their Outside Problems Tour. The run hits Chicago tonight.

The pair started their joint Tiny Desk set with a take on “Make A Picture” from Bird’s latest album, Inside Problems. Beam then led Bird through the Iron & Wine classic “Flightless Bird, American Mouth.” The performance continued with “Left Handed Kisses,” a song off Andrew’s 2016 LP Are You Serious that originally was recorded as a duet with Fiona Apple. Beam and Bird capably reworked the tune in fine fashion and went on to end the session with Break It Yourself standout “Orpheo Looks Back.”
