Amos Lee covered several Grateful Dead songs with the help of the Red Rocks Chamber Orchestra on Monday night at Red Rocks Amphitheatre outside of Denver. The concert began with an opening set by Patty Griffin who returned to the stage to join Lee during the headliner’s encore.
Lee and his band warmed up with a handful of songs before bringing out the ensemble of musicians Lee called the Red Rocks Chamber Orchestra. The special guests were conducted by Andrew Lipke who previously led the Colorado Symphony while backing Lee at Red Rocks. Following “Violin,” the guest players augmented covers of the Grateful Dead’s “Black Muddy River” and “Sugaree.” Lee then returned to the Dead’s material at the end of the set, leading the collective onstage through “Help On The Way” > “Slipknot!” > “Franklin’s Tower.”
Monday’s encore began with Griffin joining in on “Mountains of Sorrow.” The night ended with “Arms Of A Woman” and “Windows Are Rolled Down.” Watch audience-shot video clips from last night at Red Rocks below:
