ALO :: 10.28.11 :: Great American Music Hall :: San Francisco, CA

Wall to wall smiling faces in vibrant, often funny “super human” costumes populated the Great American Music Hall as ALO kicked Halloween weekend into high gear. The movement of the people was the mission of this crazy talented four-piece, who sounded tight and together even though this was one of their first tours in a spell. Their chemistry seems to fulminate wonderfully whenever they assemble on stages, and the mixture worked especially well this night, sending the painted adult children into throes of wiggling and giggling, an infectious wave that poured out onto the city streets between sets. News of a new album was met with great cheer, and the Steve Adams sung ditty “Falling Dominoes” was instantly appealing and bodes well for ALO’s follow-up to Man of the World. As usual, the mix of jazz-level playing and superb pop instincts combined for something unique but oh-so-easy to like. More than anything, one came away with an appreciation that this band loves what they do (as do their gifted pals who sat in like Tea Leaf Green’s Josh Clark and Reed Mathis) and knows just how to make us love it, too.
