Alabama Shakes Drummer Steve Johnson Indicted On Child Abuse Charges
Alabama Shakes drummer Steve Johnson is facing child abuse charges. According to the Associated Press and local media, Johnson was arrested last week following his indictment alleging “willful torture, willful abuse and cruelly beating or otherwise willfully maltreating a child under the age of 18.”
The 35-year-old co-founded Alabama Shakes in 2009 with Brittany Howard, Heath Fogg and Zac Cockrell. Alabama Shakes have been on hiatus since 2018 as Howard focuses on her solo career.
Johnson — who was taken to Limestone County Jail in Athens, Alabama — will be arraigned on April 7. His bail has been set at $21,500.
The AP report indicates Johnson is currently on probation after pleading guilty last March to “violating a domestic violence protection order in Limestone County.” Alabama Shakes representatives did not respond to the AP’s request for comment.
