Alabama Shakes Lead The Grammys Highlights

Last night the 58th annual Grammy Awards were held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Hosted by LL Cool J, among the evening’s big winners and memorable performers were Alabama Shakes who took home four wins and played a song from their acclaimed album Sound & Color.

Alabama Shakes won Best Alternative Album and Best Engineered Album for Sound & Color, while the album’s track “Don’t Wanna Fight” also earned Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance. Frontwoman Brittany Howard lead the group on a moving performance of the two-time winning song. Nominated producer Dave Cobb had a big night with Jason Isbell taking home the awards for Best Americana Album for Something More Than Free and Best American Roots Song for “24 Frames,” while Chris Stapleton’s Cobb-produced album Traveller winning Best Country Album and the title track being named Best Country Solo Performance.

Stapleton, Gary Clark Jr. and Bonnie Raitt paid tribute to B.B. King with a stirring performance of “The Thrill Is Gone” and Jackson Browne and the Eagles honored Glenn Frey with a touching rendition of “Take It Easy.” Lady Gaga, backed by Nile Rodgers, performed a medley of David Bowie hits while cycling through several costume changes that mimicked Bowie’s iconic style. Hollywood Vampires featuring Alice Cooper, Johnny Depp, Joe Perry, Matt Sorum and Duff McKagan honored Lemmy of Motörhead with a raucous performance of “Ace Of Spades.” Sound issues hampered Adele’s performance of “All I Ask,” while Stevie Wonder and Penatonix remembered Earth, Wind & Fire’s Maurice White with an acappela rendition of “That’s The Way Of The World.”

Other notable winners last night included Best Contemporary Instrumental Album going to Snarky Puppy’s Sylva, Best Historical Album for Bob Dylan And The Band’s The Basement Tapes Complete: The Bootleg Series Vol. 11, Best Folk Album for Béla Fleck And Abigail Washburn’s Béla Fleck & Abigail Washburn, Best Jazz Instrumental Album went to Past Present by John Scofield, Best American Roots Performance went to Mavis Staples for “See That My Grave Is Kept Clean” and Best Blues Album went to Buddy Guy’s Born To Play Guitar.

Album Of The Year went to Taylor Swift’s 1989 and Record Of The Year went to Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk.” Rapper Kendrick Lamar, who lead the night with 11 nominations, won five awards, sweeping the Rap category. The full list of winners can be found via this link.
