Santa Cruz, California-based bluegrass band AJ Lee & Blue Summit will release a new studio album entitled City Of Glass on July 19 through Signature Sounds. The latest single off the forthcoming release, a cover of “He Called Me Baby,” premiered in advance of the record’s release.

Produced by The California HoneydropsLech Wierzynski (who is featured on a track), City Of Glass is AJ Lee & Blue Summit’s third studio album. The band consisting of AJ Lee on mandolin, Jan Purat on fiddle and Scott Gates and Sullivan Tuttle on guitar, is joined on “He Called Me Baby” by bassist Forrest Marowitz. Additionally, the 12-track album, which is the group’s first backed by a label, features a contribution from Sullivan Tuttle’s sister Molly Tuttle as well.

AJ Lee & Blue Summit previously shared the album’s lead single, “Hillside.” The second single, “He Called Me Baby,” was written by acclaimed country songwriter Harlan Howard, who originally recorded the song (as “She Called Me Baby”) in 1961. Country legend Patsy Cline recorded “He Called Me Baby” with the Jordanaires, and years later R&B vocalist Candi Staton scored a hit with her version.

Regarding their take on the frequently covered country classic, AJ Lee & Blue Summit told JamBase:

“In early 2023 we started putting together material for our third studio record and were looking for a non-bluegrass cover that would give AJ a chance to showcase her vocals in a way she hadn’t done before. Our producer Lech Wierzynski from The California Honeydrops brought us a couple of different song ideas and we really loved this old Harlan Howard song.

“It was originally called ‘She Called Me Baby’ until Patsy Cline recorded it as ‘He Called Me Baby’ in 1962. It’s a simple but powerful love song and we had a great time checking the original country/R&B versions and putting our own spin on it.”
