Aaron Freeman (Gene Ween) Calls an End to Ween

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Ween frontman Aaron Freeman, better known as Gene Ween revealed that he is “retiring Gene Ween”. When asked by the magazine if this meant the end of band, Freeman replied “Pretty much, yeah. It’s been a long time, 25 years. It was a good run.”

Freeman, who formed the band back in 1984 with high school friend Mickey Melchiondo (also known as Dean Ween), goes on to say that “For me it’s a closed book. In life sometimes, in the universe, you have to close some doors to have others open. There’s no, ‘Goddamn that such and such!’ For me, I’d like to think it’s a door I can close finally.”

For his part, Melchiondo has responded to the news in a post on his Facebook page saying “This is news to me, all I can say for now I guess.”

Ween’s most recent studio release was 2007’s La Cucaracha. The band put out 11 albums over the course of their long and storied career.
