A Showcase Of Supergroups Spotify Playlist

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young made their recording debut with the release of their album Déjà Vu 40 years ago today. The landmark album brought together four musicians, each successful with at least one previous band, establishing one of the all-time great supergroups in rock ‘n’ roll history. This week’s Saturday Stream examines the work of several other supergroups that have come together with the goal of making new music.

While the criteria for what qualifies a band as a “supergroup” is somewhat debatable, the Spotify Playlist presented here features 40 songs by projects involving three or more musicians coming together following previous substantial success either with another band or as a solo artist. Some entries are from one-off albums, others are from more fully committed, long lasting collaborative endeavors.

Eric Clapton is on display with arguably the first supergroup Cream, as well as Blind Faith and Derek & The Dominoes. Legendary ensembles Traveling Wilburys and The Highwaymen are featured as well as prog rock outfits, such as Asia and Emerson, Lake & Palmer. The just-announce conglomerate Big Walnuts Yonder is included as well as Jack White’s ventures The Dead Weather and The Raconteurs. Other more recent collabs include Prophets Of Rage, WILD FLAG, Them Crooked Vultures, case/lang/veirs, Monsters Of Folk, Middle Brother and more.

From the jam scene there’s of course Oysterhead, along with The Word, Hard Working Americans, Colonel Claypool’s Bucket Of Bernie Brains, Frogwings, Trigger Hippy, OHMphrey and others. You’ll also find such projects as Chickenfoot, The Rides, A Perfect Circle, Divine Fits, Middle Brother and a few additional collectives making up the 40 tracks which you can stream below:
