JamBase Questionnaire: Motopony

Welcome back to JamBase’s baker’s dozen to the bright lights of the music world. Last time we heard from Easy Star All-Stars.

There’s a glassy, tomorrow leaning vibe to Seattle’s Motopony, modernity in the archetypal sense permeating the many appealing, artfully warbled grooves on their nicely varied self-titled debut (released May 23 on tinyOGRE). At first they seem like a newfangled child of The Cars and other 80s futurist-popsters but let the record play and soon a warming flush appears in their cheeks, finding full incarnation on the jubilant cry against sorrowful morbidity “I Am My Body,” the grave welcomed with rolling piano and clattering percussion, before see-sawing between chrome-plated shimmer and beautifully trundling ditties. What becomes obvious long before Motopony reaches “Euphoria” at album’s close is expectations get you nowhere with this band. They vibe with some of what Grizzly Bear, Dr. Dog and AgesandAges are putting out but the complications and that distinctly contemporary edge carve out their own space. Motopony is one of those lovely bands that arrive fully-formed, overflowing with choice ingredients, playing to no one’s sensibilities but their own, and knocking out hugely infectious music in the bargain. (Dennis Cook)
