JamBase Questionnaire: Nicole Atkins

By Team JamBase Mar 23, 2011 1:36 pm PDT

Welcome back to JamBase’s baker’s dozen to the bright lights of the music world. Last time we heard from Arbouretum.

Careful where you walk
Remain in the light
Watch where death resides
It’ll find you from all sides

Thus begins Nicole Atkins’s new album, Mondo Amore (released February 8 on Razor & Tie), vultures flying all around before turning on quick heels to reveal equal facility with 60s girl group flavors and ballsy rock, all delivered in a snap-to-attention voice that’s part prime Janis Joplin, part top flight jazz crooner, part tough blues mama, and always dripping with pheromones and feeling. The long-awaited follow-up to Atkins’ celebrated 2007 record, Neptune City, is an ambitious yet totally listenable affair, showing off a broad range and the chops to pull all of it off with aplomb. With Mondo Amore, Atkins seals the deal on being one of the strongest new female artists in rock today, a seductress with dark-edged soul and real substance. (Dennis Cook)
