By Andy Kahn May 31, 2015 • 10:32 am PDT

Earlier this year saxophonist and composer Kamasi Washington released his long awaited and triple debut LP, The Epic. The nearly three-hour album released on Flying Lotus’ label Brainfeeder is an opus of jazz blended with strings and choirs that truly lives up to its title. Washington has contributed to many other artists’ albums including Flying Lotus, Stanley Clarke and Kendrick Lamar, featuring prominently on the Lamar’s acclaimed 2015 record To Pimp A Butterfly. The Los Angeles native recently returned to his hometown to perform The Epic in its entirety.

Washington’s performance at the Regent Theater in Los Angeles was filmed for NPR’s Jazz Night In America series. Blending interviews discussing the recording of The Epic with footage from the concert, Washington is joined on stage by a huge array of supporting musicians including bassist Thundercat, vocalist Patrice Quinn, multi-instrumentalist Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and Kamasi’s father father, saxophonist Rickey Washington. There are nearly two hours of footage from the truly epic night of music, which you can watch below:
