Allman Brothers Band :: 10.22.14 :: Beacon Theatre :: New York, NY

The Allman Brothers Band continued what’s expected to be the final run of shows in the group’s legendary 45-year career on Wednesday night at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. Gregg Allman reiterated that the band will draw their career to a close with the October 28th finale as he told ABB biographer Alan Paul in a just-published feature, “It’s been 45 years and that’s about enough. I think it’s a good thing.”

As expected, there were no guests for Night Two and the Allmans focused on a number of their much-beloved classics throughout the evening. There were a few cover curveballs with Dr. John’s “I Walk On Gilded Splinters,” The Beatles’ “Rain” and the traditional “Will The Circle Be Unbroken?” each trotted out in the first set. A move from the fiery “Black Hearted Woman” into “Will The Circle Be Unbroken?” wasn’t planned and served as a fine example of what the current lineup can do. We should also note guitarist Derek Trucks utilized Duane Allman’s 1957 Les Paul Goldtop at Wednesday night’s show.

The second set started with Gregg leading drummer Butch Trucks, guitarist Warren Haynes and bassist Oteil Burbridge on his signature “Melissa,” before Haynes fronted the group on “The Same Thing.” From there, “Come and Go Blues” was followed by one of the last great Allman Brothers Band originals – “Desdemona.” Next up was “Southbound” which led into a meaty “Mountain Jam” that contained a drums and bass segment. While the stage setlist had the band returning for a “Whipping Post” encore, the Allmans called an audible and ended Night Two with “One Way Out.” The run continues on Friday.
