Phil Lesh And Friends Start To Eat A Peach In Philadelphia

By Scott Bernstein Nov 13, 2013 6:30 am PST

Heading into Halloween the most prevalent rumor for Phish’s “musical costume” was the Allman Brothers Band’s Eat A Peach. While the Vermonters instead offered a suite of new material, Phil Lesh & Friends have picked up the album covering torch on their 12-show tour. Last night at the Tower Theater in Philadelphia Lesh and his band -which includes Grahame Lesh, Anders Osborne, Luther Dickinson, Jason Crosby and Tony Leone for this tour -started tackling Eat A Peach.

Opening act American Jubilee kicked off the Eat A Peach action by working “Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More” into their set. The current version of Phil and Friends have been playing less Grateful Dead material than any other lineup to date, but last night contained more songs from the legendary band’s repertoire than any other show on the tour. When Lesh’s ensemble returned for the second set, they transitioned a “Viola Lee Blues” opener into the second track off Eat A Peach -“Les Brers In A Minor.” Later in the set Grahame Lesh handled vocals for “Melissa.” The evening’s fourth and final Eat A Peach song was a “Mountain Jam” that closed the second set, leaving five tunes off the legendary album for tonight’s Fall Tour Finale.
