Having taken the long route from little-known gospel artist to the Jimi Hendrix of sacred steel, Robert Randolph is the rare musician who has managed to carve out a unique place in the American music continuum with little more than hard work and musicianship. Trained in the "sacred steel" style native to Pentecostal House of God churches, Robert Randolph tackles the pedal-steel guitar with a virtuosic ferocity. Randolph and his Family Band (featuring his cousin Marcus and sister Lenesha) are renowned for their incendiary live shows, which marry fervent gospel tunes and an irresistible rock 'n' roll swagger. His unmatched wah-wah slide-guitar technique has turned many heads, including those of John Medeski, Eric Clapton, Dave Matthews and, most recently, T-Bone Burnett. T-Bone Burnett, the award-winning musician and producer, helped the band develop its original pieces and put its own bluesy stamp on songs by legends such as Prince, John Lennon and Bob Dylan. With his scorching virtuosity the band's cross-platform appeal makes them equally suitable for Bonnaroo, blues fests and SportsCenter promos; recent years have seen Randolph burning off Hendrix covers with the Roots as comfortably as he opened for B.B. King. They've got the funk and are dealing it out in spades. Witnessing the musicianship and performance style of the Family Band on StageOne will be like discovering an underground jam session - with fast-paced rhythms and strong bass beats led by Robert's steel pedal guitar, the Randolph's prove that the family that jams together, stays together. Named by Rolling Stone as one of their "100 greatest Guitarists of all time," Robert Randolph is one bad mother—shut yo' mouth!
