Black Nature Band opens! tickets at Sila returns and Black Nature Band makes its Ashkenaz debut in this night of searing, charged African funk. Sila (the singer and band) unveil songs from his next CD, “Super African,” to be released Feb. 25. A vital force in the Bay Area music scene, Kenyan native Victor Sila brings together both his roots and his own vision, singing original songs in English and Swahili. His lyrics tell of the African experience, the problems he and many others face every day, in a musical language understood throughout the world. Known for spearheading a polyrhythmic renaissance in dynamic live performances, Sila’s sound is a funky fusion of African rhythm, Afrobeat, and reggae, influenced by such artists as Fela Kuti, James Brown, Prince, and Otis Redding. In 2010 Sila won the coveted NAACP Image award for Outstanding World Music Album and the San Francisco Weekly music award for Best International Act. Along with Sila on vocals, the band features drummer Bennie Murray, guitarists Dave Shul and Khalil Doak-Anthony, bassist Michael Shiono, saxophonist Roger Cox, and trombonist Andre Webb. A founding and current member of the world-acclaimed Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars, the singer-producer-filmmaker Black Nature moved to San Francisco and started the Black Nature Band three years ago. The group performs his original, positive music that incorporates a unique blend of African rhythms, reggae, dancehall, rock, hip-hop, and R&B. They have toured much of the West and Southwest, from California through Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.
