The Seventh Annual Brooklyn John Hartford Tribute takes flight in all its steampowered glory, featuring the Deadly Gentlemen, Tony Trischka, Michael Daves, Chris Eldridge, Kristin Andreassen and many, many more on their own and backed by the house band, the Electric SteamPowered Water Taxi Boys. Friday, January 31, 2014, Littlefield, in Gowanus, Brooklyn, will ring to the sounds of John Hartford songs, masterfully performed on banjo, fiddle, electric guitar, piano, pedal steel, by the New York area’s finest musicians. The performances will reflect John Hartford’s stylistic base, with bluegrass, banjoedup electric rocknroll, and oldtime fiddle spread across two stages, over four hours. The Deadly Gentlemen will come down from Boston bringing their truly unique and progressive approach to bluegrass and stringband music. Their modernist take on these traditional American genres is reminiscent of John Hartford’s break from the thenestablished bluegrass style, in the late 1960s, with his groundbreaking hit, Gentle on My Mind. Though Hartford’s songwriting and arranging continuously shocked bluegrass purists, from his breakout 1970 release, AereoPlain, to his final days in 2002, Hartford also managed to win most of them over, with his mastery of oldtime fiddle, bluegrass banjo, and when he showcased it, guitar, not to mention his largerthanlife stage presence. Making his second appearance at the John Hartford Tribute, Tony Trischka has also spent years studying, mastering, teaching, and bucking musical traditions, simultaneously frustrating and bedazzling purists. Trishka will be joined by his former Skyline bandmates Barry Mitterhoff and Danny Weiss, as well as Michael Daves and Mary Olive Smith. Musical Director Jordan Shapiro says, “It’s great to have this incredible lineup of stars and local talent paying tribute to John Hartford, whose influence continues to reverberate, more than 10 years after his death and almost 50 years since his career began.”
