Afro-German bassist and composer Kai Eckhardt unveils his new international band project, Zeitgeist, as a prelude to the New Year. Eckhardt does not need much of an introduction after his extensive work with guitar pioneer John McLaughlin and Indian percussionist Trilok Gurtu, and locally in the Indian-jazz fusion band George Brooks’ Summit. For almost three decades Eckhardt has appeared all over the world accompanying a broad range of top artists in jazz and world-music. Among his more adventurous projects were The Village, a collaboration with activist Julia Butterfly Hill and Phish drummer Jon Fishman at Ashkenaz; working with Michael Franti; and a trio with poet Michael McClure and Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek. His full credits are too long to list here. As co-leader of the award winning jam band Garaj Mahal, he began introducing his compositions and lyrics to a growing audience. Following extensive rehearsals, his own band Zeitgeist emerges in the Bay Area, presenting a courageous set of spirited originals. The listener can expect gorgeous instrumentals crafted around African and Indian themes as well as groove-infused vocal tunes with a contemporary message. Kai Eckhardt Zeitgeist features its leader on bass, with soulful vocalist Scheherazade Stone, keyboardist Osam Ezzeldin (from Cairo, Egypt), Bay Area drum master Deszon X Claibourne, Australian guitar wizard Christopher Paul Robinson, and newest bandmember Savannah Joe Lack (from Australia) on violin.
