The Claypool Lennon Delirium Honors Gene Wilder & Welcomes Yoko Ono In NYC
By Scott Bernstein Aug 31, 2016 • 2:52 pm PDT
On Tuesday night Les Claypool and Sean Lennon brought The Claypool Lennon Delirium to New York City for a performance at Irving Plaza. Not only did Claypool honor the late actor Gene Wilder with a cover from Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, but the band welcomed Yoko Ono to contribute to a Primus song.
The CLD played a 13-song main set heavy on covers including two King Crimson songs: “In The Court Of The Crimson King” and “Thela Hun Ginjeet.” At one point Claypool teased “Pure Imagination” from Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, a movie for which Primus provided their own soundtrack. In fact, Primus toured behind Primus & The Chocolate Factory for over a year. Later in the night Claypool played a lengthier version of “Pure Imagination” featuring a bass solo and verse of the song. The Claypool Lennon Delirium then started up a take on Primus’s “Southbound Pachyderm.” Sean’s mother and John Lennon’s widow, Yoko Ono emerged to add improvised lyrics to the cover. Ono was the evening’s second guest as Sean’s The Ghost Of A Saber Tooth Tiger band mate Charlotte Kemp Muhl came out earlier in the night for a take on the band’s “Animals.”
As a reminder, Live Nation has announced a webcast of The Claypool Lennon Delirium’s performance live from The Fillmore Philadelphia tonight. Sean, Les and the rest of the band are expected to take the stage at approximately 10 p.m. ET this evening. Watch the whole show right here on JamBase:
