Kind of a let down. I was amped to see them get some props, but children of december is kind of a tough song to nail live I suppose. Such a talented band - i'm not sure it came through. The vocals were rough for sure...but it isn't Conan that will make or break them. From their orginal Bill Frisel sounding stuff to the current indy role, these guys have really morphed into something amazing, and the new album deserves all the critical praise it gets. I just wish it came through on their first national broadcast. I personally would be scared shitless.

gabus... most dynamic band ever?? sorry dude, dynamics dont ring out as the center of attention for the slip. oh, and to lovemusicfood- i believe the bass guitar supplied the ever so subtle effects/looping. this song is a crappy, poppy one lacking much substance and the "new rendition" is not much better. Max can totally school their drummer as well

I've been listenin to the guys for about 4 years now and there's no way i can say that performance was great. The vocals were far from good and his voice was all over the place, cracking even. As far as the new album I don't get the hype it wore out to me quicker than the average album i buy and I'm not rushing to throw it back in anytime soon. I'll look forward to seeing what these guys do with the new material at Langerado and maybe that'll hook me back into the new sound. The conan performance almost seemed like you were watching a band you like choke under pressure, oh well

Nice job, guys.

I found it a solid performance with some to-be-expected nerves, but I don't fault anyone for nerves their first time in front of a national audience.

As for the critics, you can't expect to fit these guys into a 4-minute slot and hope that the average viewer gets it. Hell, i've been trying to find just one album or show tape with which to introduce them to my friends and still can't find the quintessential. They're different every tour, every night.

good work, BAM.

Rossco8, I couldn't agree more. Their sound was once edgy, experimental, and funky as shit back in the day. Now, they just strike me as a dime a dozen indie band. I have nothing against indie music. I'm just commenting on how much they've changed (sold out). I don't see what all the hype is about with them nowadays. I caught a little bit of their set a few months ago when they were opening for My Morning Jacket. Let's just say I was quite disappointed going into the show with memories of The Slip from 99-01. Oh well, you gotta eat somehow.

damn, i kinda wish they didnt cut out andrews drum part at the end, its the best part of the song. That sounded a lot like the Lupo's recording from a few years ago. I liked the shout out to conan, and the shoutout to the 'dise. To the previous comments, yes they do sound different, but you need to understand that if this album had not been made, there would be no more slip. This was a pretty do or die record for them and if you cant appreciate that, than you're gonna have a hard time trying to follow a lot of bands. Also, if you go to a show where they headline, they are still very experimental. Just try it, u like it, i swear.

Lets also realize that this song had to be chopped down to fit in the aloted time. I saw them in Prov and on NYE in Brooklyn and I feel that they are hitting their stride once again... WIth the return of Weight of Solomon and new songs like Airplane Primitive and Paper Birds its pretty evident that their is plenty of gas left in their creative tank...

i come across a fair amount of fans who prefer the slip sound of a bygone era. I usually smile and nod, but I think to myself that, for me, it is not what they are doing at any particular point in time that I enjoy, but how they approach and execute it.

They can take their undeniably diverse capabilities and tastefully apply them to the relevant sound du jour. And though the 4-minute listener may hear "just another indie band," when you peel back the layers, you notice what you thought were just bar chords are actually of a more complex Frisellian texture, or that those are bass-harmonics answering the vocals, or that Andrew is counting 7 in different time signatures at once.

Yes, they've changed, but it's the How that keeps me coming back.

MOOSE CONVENTION...I saw them the other night at Kenny's Castaways, also the first venue that phish played in NYC, and they were unbelievable. They deserve some attention and should be given a chance to exhibit their talent at a festival for the mass to see them first-hand. They have consistently improved after each perfomrmance and are only getting better. They are lead by the talented Brian Eisenberg on the drums and Asher on lead guitar and vocals. They have an eclectic sound that comprises of funky jazz and jammy guitar sequences reminiscent of the Dead. If they are not "big" enough yet to be booked for a festival, they should atleast be checked out at their local shows. Sleep tight wookies.

who ARE all you people who say things like "not good. they're better live," and "I'm just commenting on how much they've changed (sold out)."

First of all, what do you expect from a network TV appearance? The idea is to reach NEW people, not please those of us who have been seeing them for 8 years. Second, if you go to one of their headlining shows you'll find that their ability to experiment and improvise is not only still intact, it's grown into something even more incredible than ever before. Third, perhaps their jams were more open-ended and free a few years ago, but DUDE, the things they are doing now are WAY WAY WAY more experimental and innovative than that stuff.

You all just sound like a bunch of nostailgic burnt-out old hippies. Throw on a boot from 91 and get out of the way. Music needs to continue evolving, even if you're not.

oh, and a special shot out to the guy who thinks STS9 and Spoonfed Tribe are better bands than the Slip. wow. take it E-asy dude.

Yes the SLIP has changed, i do prefer their more jazzy style than the new indie sound, but they pull it off real well blending the two styles, as far as the people who say they arnt good u obviously are basing that on what u saw on conan, which was by far a sub par performance. brads vocals were off definatly. but i dont think that was his fault. definatly go see them live, its a whole different thing, i personally enjoy older slip pre 2000 era. trust me these guys are not just another indie band, they actually have a ton more talent than your standard indie rock band. i dont see the indie bands playing jazz or ever have played jazz and then switched, everyones styles change look at SCI who is not the same sound they were before which is a shame, same happened to phish their style changed every other year especially after farmhouse came out. bottom line is listen to the band more than just one time please other than the one bad performance they give on TV. its an aquired taste you either like it or dont, thats music for ya

one of the reasons the slips music has held my interest for a decade is that it has always been in a state of change. judging this band by its 4 minuite, super high pressure, Conan performance will do little to help you understand what they are about. anyone who wants to understand this band might try listening to the disk 'Live Electric' wil not hear better music anywhere!

I think a part of whats going on here is that this band has built a big underground following who are the kind of people who dont like to swallow anything commercial - i understand - i am usually this way myself. but, for one reason or another I have learned a deep respect for this band over the years that im willing to let them lead my ear anyplace they might dare to go. doing so has always done me well.

I think Brad can sing alot better than Dylan has ever sung at any concert I have attended...and I love Dylan... when Brad talks about the 90's I feel somthing my imagination compares to the way people from the sixties feel about Dylan. sorry if this upsets any Dylan fans out there but if you give these guys time i think you will see what im talking about.

I find it humorous on a music website like this, where people take jabs at the Slip based on one- 4 minute- TV performance. Like others said above, this was an exposure/publicity thing, and I think it was very effective, from that perspective. Was it a stellar performance? Of course not...but most TV studio performances lack the energy of true live performances. I'm new to checking out the Slip. If you really wanna see what all the buzz is that's been created by the Slip, check out the new album, Eisenhower. It's magnificent! For readers of this website, they shouldn't base what they think of them, if they've never listened to them, on one "cookie cutter" TV appearance...Check out the new album, then you'll see what's going on!

True dat Evilfunk. I love Dylan and I am sure that Bobby would appreciate everything inside of Eisenhower. True..this was not their best performance however Eisenhower is a wonderfully special rock record. The songs are unique and crisp. should be all about the Songwriting and not based on 1 nerve wrecking performance.
Caught them in December and...well it was quite moving.
If they play close enough..I am there.

the slip is a great band. eisenhower is a great album. this particular performance was sub-par, but take into consideration the fact that this was their first appearance on network tv. yea, they're professionals, but they're also human. they could've easily had the jitters just as any of us would have. they'll keep bringin' it live. keep the faith and don't denounce a great group of musicians just because they didn't play very well for a couple of minutes.

p.s... jambandssuck, you clearly don't belong here if you're not going to change your idiotic criticism into constructive criticism. at least TELL US why you think the slip sucks ass. who knows? maybe someone will agree... maybe.

Ignore the trolls, they post shit to every one of these threads trying to rile up whatever people are excited about.

The Slip are awesome. They were great back in the day doing the crazy acid jazz and they are rocking out now without selling out or turning their back on their roots. Eisenhower is a great album but the songs are even better live. The live shows are off the hook and they are writing great new material as well as playing older numbers like Weight of Solomon and Eube.

As far as the Conan appearance, it is great exposure for them. They are great musicians, they deserve success but more importantly the world needs more music like the Slip. I predict they are going to get very big but I trust them enough not to abandon their roots. I also feel that anyone who says that they have abandoned their roots isn't listening very well. Their sound has always been an evolution and it isn't over yet. Thankfully!!!

2 more cents - like others have said a 3 minute TV spot is a tough thing to do live, even with a rehearsal of a song you know well. Marc seemed to be totally into it but Brad seemed way nervous and you could see the stage makeup
on him, freaky TV stuff!

If you want to see something closer to an actual live Slip performance, check out this Airplane/Primitive from Rolling Stone, it's on YouTube, at least if they don't pull it like they pulled the slip on conan already!!!
